The Pepin Tote from Noodlehead is a wonderful pattern for trying out sewing with a new fabric. It features straightforward construction for an open tote with a large front pocket and two interior pockets. You have options to install a metal snap on the front pocket, a magnetic snap to close the top, as well as instructions to add a 20″ recessed zipper closure instead. I chose to make mine from waxed canvas. I used leather for the straps and I decided to install the recessed zipper.
2021 was a year of sewing experiments and handmade gifts. I got really interested in bag making and I made several from different patterns. I liked the Pepin Tote pattern for its simplicity and overall usefulness. I wanted to experiment with waxed canvas and I purchased enough material to make three totes. I ended up keeping one for my everyday work tote, and I gifted the other two.
This was my first time using waxed canvas, and I had a lot to learn. The canvas is stiff and it doesn’t give like regular fabric. It felt like pushing balsa wood under the needle. At one point, I was sewing a seam and the canvas butted up on the serger against the wall behind my sewing machine. The fabric just stopped moving under the needle. I couldn’t figure out what was happening until I looked and saw that the canvas was still rigid as a piece of wood and couldn’t go any further. So, it took a little getting used to. After three completed bags, I felt like I’d gotten the hang of it.
Noodlehead patterns provide cutting instructions that include rectangular measurements for the exterior, interior, and interfacing fabrics. Suggested cutting layouts are also included. Anna Graham, the designer, provides clear and complete instructions for every step of the construction process. The Pepin Tote would be a great project for beginners.
Waxed canvas develops a patina as it ages. Folds and wrinkles in the fabric leave marks that give it its distinctive look. Waxing the canvas provides protection from rain and minor spills. I’ve discovered that raindrops will leave small spots on the canvas. These spots and crease lines can be easily removed by heating the fabric with a hairdryer. The heat softens the wax and restores the original look. After extended use, the fabric shows wear that resembles well-worn leather. The fabric is strong and durable. It’s perfect for backpacks, duffel bags, totes, and other items.
