As soon as I saw this quilt, I knew I would have to make it! It’s the Whistle Stop Quilt Pattern by Christine of Tessellate Textiles. These are the single-block baby quilts that finish at 40 inches square. The pattern includes a single-block throw size quilt that’s 60″ square and a nine-block throw that’s also 60″ square.
At this scale, the blocks are pretty big, and the quilt top goes together fast! The half-square triangle units measure four inches square. The pattern directions are clear. You make the half-square triangles, join them into the four quarters with the background patches, and assemble the top adding the cross bars with the square in the middle. Sewing on the borders is the final step, and voila!
Even with great directions, I managed to turn the blocks around a few times. At one point, I removed one upside-down block, stitched it back together, and turned two more upside-down! I have no idea how that happened.
I am still deciding how I want to quilt these tops. A simple edge-to-edge would be the easiest, but I’m thinking about breaking out the walking foot and straight-stitching them. I’m always a little anxious before I start quilting. I have to remind myself that it’s not a quilt before it’s quilted and take the plunge!
