Happy New Year! It’s been great so far!
I spent the holidays thinking about goals and resolutions for 2024. This year I’ve decided to focus on learning new techniques, experimenting, and making lots of quilts.
I started the week by making pyramid blocks from equilateral triangles. I used bright, solid colors with a light peachy background. I only have a little experience with triangles other than half-square triangles, so these are new for me. Once I made them, I spent a long time figuring out what to do with them. I’m happy with this solution. It’s fun and modern.
Details
- The bias edges were not a problem, but I was careful not to stretch them.
- The seams and points matched well.
- I wasn’t happy with my color palette.
- Taking out the blue and arranging the two greens and oranges in pairs made it work.
- Getting the setting triangles right was tricky. I just winged it.
- I found batting and material for the backing in my stash. Woo-Hoo! I’ll quilt it as soon as I can.
Hue Year’s Resolution Art Challenge
I just learned about the Hue Year’s Resolution Art Challenge for the first time this week. January 1-5 is Red Week. I went through my stash, picked out some reds (I don’t have that many?), and made two blocks.
Details
- Another sample of equilateral triangles. This time I added setting triangles.
- Like my dresser scarf, I had trouble sizing the setting triangles. I might have to ask my math teacher friend to help me.
- I’m practicing piecing very narrow slivers and added some in both blocks
- Cassandra Beaver has a good tutorial on this technique at We All Sew. You can find it here.
Thanks for reading! It feels good to experiment and nice to write about it here. Happy Sewing,
