I was looking for a quilt pattern featuring foxes to make for my grandson who will turn two in May. He has a favorite fox toy and I wanted to make a quilt with foxes too. This pattern features eight foxes in a birch forest.
The pattern is from Sew Fresh Quilts and has two size options, a baby quilt that finishes at 38” x 45” or a full-size quilt that finishes at 76” x 90”. I wanted a quilt that he could enjoy throughout his childhood. The baby size seemed too small and the full size too large so I split the difference and went halfway between. It was easy to size all the measurements up by half and my quilt finished at 57” x 67.5”. It’s big enough for quilt forts or picnics and small enough for a little guy.
I tend to be a ‘make it up as you go along quilter’ and this was the first time I’ve purchased a pattern. The pattern pieces fit together precisely and you have to follow the directions to get good results. The designer provided clear instructions to help you be successful, but the process was new to me. There are lots of cuts and seams with plenty of opportunities to turn bits and pieces the wrong way. I got to spend some time with my seam ripper. The finished result is charming and well worth the effort.
This was a fun quilt to make and I learned a lot. My family lives in Colorado where aspen trees flutter their golden leaves in the slightest breeze. I appliqued a few leaves to this quilt to introduce movement and to give a nod to their beautiful state. I shipped it out in mid January.
